Wedding Day

After we got engaged, we set the date! We knew where we wanted to get married, we just didn’t know WHEN. Then we realized that the upcoming summer the perfect wedding date fell on the Saturday of 07-07-07. Three Sevens- Trinity AND the number of a Covenant (which we both had been teaching during Totus Tuus! God’s faithful promise he makes to his people-it was God’s love story to each of us. And of course Christ was the new and everlasting covenant-his perfect and final love note to us all. It was truly the perfect wedding date, but our beautiful church was of course booked that date, so we settled for the week prior: June 30th, 2007.
We decided to do our wedding on a $5000 budget and with a free venue (the gym at my parish), free catering (we had to just pay the cost for food-a family friend donated her catering services as her wedding gift), my brother donated cases of wine (he is a wine salesman) and asking parishioners for a hook up on flowers, and cake-we pretty much stayed within budget!

The day before we got hitched, I remember Matt and I were at the hotel, welcoming our guests, family and friends from out of town. People were stressing a bit with last minute details and my dearest husband to be did something that made me love him even more. He took my hand, and pulled me aside to take a walk. We went behind our hotel where there is this beautiful path, filled with flora and fauna, walked hand in hand, and prayed together. We offered up the stress, and asked that God keep us focused on the Sacrament we would soon experience. Then we found a bench along this path so we sat down. At our feet, was a stream trickling past us. Matt knelt down, took off my shoes, and washed my feet. He promised that he would serve God and serve me. We switched places and I washed his. We truly felt like Adam and Eve in the Garden before the fall, walking close with God and serving one another with love. This was truly the best way we could have prepared for our wedding day.

The day of our wedding, Matt and I were both blessed with a pretty stress-less day, filled with excitement and anticipation. It was all a blur really until I walked down the aisle, and then it was like time stopped, which was such a gift! My Deacon Daddy walked me down the aisle and I bawled like a baby. Not because I was nervous or sad or worried, but because I was so filled with the Holy Spirit and filled with joy and love. It was truly the happiest moment of my life!

After the wedding, we went to the reception and had a blast. My mom ran to me and told me to look outside. It had been sprinkling on and off throughout the day, but there were happy tears in her eyes… what was going on? Well, we received a wedding gift from God that day! Matt and I had talked a lot about God’s covenants with his people and how our marriage to one another was a covenant we made to each other. As we walked outside, we saw two perfect, vibrant rainbow! We felt like God had blessed and affirmed our covenant with one another! Seriously. Best. Day. Ever.

The next morning, we had brunch with my family and went to Mass together. And stopped in to see Mary 🙂 Our rings have the words, “totus tuus” engraved on them. A year ago from that date, Matt and I were spending out summer being Totally Gods, through Mary.
